Alternatif Binder Complete Feed Wafer from Hibiscus tiliaceus Linn

Production of complete rations wafer is an alternative which has a significant role in the effort of feed supply in dry season. One of the characteristics of rations wafer lies on the solidity and stability of shape and that make it easier in handling, storage, and transportation. Other than that, there is a mixed between forage and concentrate in one block wafer so that animal cannot choose between it. Thus, it is expected that the animal will has enough need of forage and concentrate and also has enough nutrition need.
To maintain the solidity and stability of wafer, it needs the use of binder substance. It that has been used through out this time is molases (waste from sugar industry). It is used, beside as an binder substance, also as a rations energy source. But, the use of molases as a mixture of feed still has some weaknesses, that is a high-level of viscosity that makes it hard to mix with other substances into the rations. High-content of molases potassium can make the animal suffer from diare if it is given in a large amount. Other than that, the use of molases these days has competed with people’s need. Because molases has frequently been used as a mixture in the making of monosodium glutamate (vetsin), substance for an enzyme production.
This research consist of three stages which is extraction of hibiscus leaf, production of complete feed wafer and physicaly testing to the product that has been made. The trial design that is used in this research is Complete Random Design Faktorial (2x5) with 3 replication. The observed factor in this research is A factor which is binder type (molases and hibiscus leaf extract) and B factor which is binder use level (0; 2,5; 5; 7,5 dan 10%).
Research result shows both wafer that use extract binder substance and molases binder not significant (P>0,05) effect to the physical characteristic of wafer rations (texture hardness, water level, thick developing, weight developing, specific gravity). Level of using binder substance is significant (P<0,05)>0,05) effect texture hardness, thick developing, and weight developing of rations wafer. The use of hibiscus leaf extract has a potention to replace molases binder. The best use level of molases and hibiscus leaf extract is 2,5%. It is possible in the treatment with higher binder level will cause surfeit of particle to water so that can reduce glue power of the binder it self.
